SANTIAGO, Chile - There has been no sign of the Chilean Air Force C130 Hercules aircraft which went missing on Monday afternoon with 38 people aboard.
The plane took off at 4:55pm Monday and lost radio contact at 6:13pm on a flight from the Chabunco Air Base in the city of Punta Arenas, to the President Eduardo Frei Montalva Antarctic Air Base.
The aircraft was carrying out logistical support tasks, transferring personnel for the revision of the floating fuel supply pipeline of the Base and carrying out anticorrosive treatment of national facilities in the area, a Chilean Air Force statement said.
Of the 38 people on board the missing plane, which is feared to have crashed, are seventeen crew members and 21 passengers.
A state of alert was immediately activated in the Magallanes Region and in the city of Santiago, while a multidisciplinary search and rescue initiative was launched.
All national and foreign air and maritime means available in the area are continuing the search in the sector where communication with the aircraft was lost.
The Air Force says it is in contact with the families of the people who were on board.
On Tuesday officials released the names of the 38 people on board the missing plane:
