The Colorado Avalanche acquired Greg Pateryn from the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday in exchange for fellow defenseman Ian Cole.
Pateryn, 30, recorded two points -- both assists -- in three games for the Wild this season. He has 41 points (four goals, 37 assists) in 270 career NHL games with the Montreal Canadiens, Dallas Stars and Wild.
Earlier on Tuesday, Pateryn was fined $5,000 -- the maximum allowed under the collective bargaining agreement -- for cross-checking Anaheim Ducks forward Sonny Milano in Minnesota's 1-0 loss on Monday. No penalty was assessed on the play.
"Greg is a strong, veteran defenseman who plays a heavy game," Avalanche executive vice president and general manager Joe Sakic said. "He's a hard-nosed, competitive player who can kill penalties, block shots and brings some additional grit to our back line.
"We thank Ian for his two years with the Avalanche, for his efforts both on the ice as well as in the community. We wish him the best of luck moving forward."
Cole, 31, had yet to record a point in two games this season.
A two-time Stanley Cup champion with Pittsburgh, Cole has collected 138 points (26 goals, 112 assists) in 543 career games with the St. Louis Blues, Penguins, Columbus Blue Jackets and the Avalanche.
