Rafael Nadal had arthroscopic surgery on Friday in Barcelona, Spain, for the injured left hip flexor that has sidelined him since January.
The injury forced Nadal to miss the French Open for the first time in 19 years.
Results of the surgery will be announced on Saturday, the Spaniard's 37th birthday, said his spokesperson, Benito Perez-Barbadillo.
Nadal, who plans to retire after the 2024 season, is a 14-time champion at Roland Garros since his 2005 debut at the tournament. He has 92 career titles and has won 22 Grand Slam singles championships -- the men's record for majors he shares with Serbia's Novak Djokovic, who won his match Friday in Paris.
The third seed, Djokovic downed No. 29 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5), 6-2 in the third round.
Nadal has not competed since hurting the hip during a loss to Mackenzie McDonald in the second round of the Australian Open on Jan. 16, and is 1-3 this season. He has been beaten in seven of his last nine matches overall, starting with a loss to Frances Tiafoe in the fourth round of the U.S. Open in September.
