Seth Jarvis scored a hat trick as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the visiting Winnipeg Jets 5-1 on Friday night, their second victory over Winnipeg in eight days.
Jordan Martinook and Alexander Nikishin also had goals for the Hurricanes. Shayne Gostisbehere and Andrei Svechnikov had two assists, while Sebastian Aho, Mark Jankowski, K'Andre Miller, Justin Robidas and Eric Robinson each collected a helper. Carolina goalie Brandon Bussi made 13 stops.
Mark Scheifele scored the only goal for Winnipeg, assisted by Gabriel Vilardi. Thomas Milic, in his NHL debut in net for Winnipeg, made 30 stops.
The Hurricanes opened the scoring with 3:54 remaining in the first period. Jarvis, a native of Winnipeg, beat Milic after settling down a pass from Gostisbehere in the slot, which he finished off by tucking in a wrist shot on the far side.
Outside of a few chances for Winnipeg, the Hurricanes controlled most of the play through the opening 20 minutes, outshooting the Jets 10-5.
Just past the halfway point of the game, Scheifele evened the score 1-1 when Vilardi caught him streaking down the ice and, in all alone, he wristed the puck into the net.
While the play was much more even through the middle frame, the Hurricanes still had a sizeable 20-10 lead in shots after 40 minutes.
The Hurricanes broke the deadlock with 8:08 remaining in the final frame. A shot from Martinook deflected and squeezed inside the post to give Carolina the 2-1 edge.
Just 47 seconds later, Jarvis scored his second of the game off a snapshot to make it 3-1. He polished off his hat trick with 1:03 remaining into the empty net.
Carolina wasn't finished yet, with a slap shot from Nikishin pushing the score to 5-1 with 23 seconds left.
