Max Fried pitched seven innings of three-hit ball as the New York Yankees defeated the host Seattle Mariners 5-0 Tuesday night, their third shutout win in five games this season.
Giancarlo Stanton went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs as the Yankees evened the three-game series at one victory apiece. New York's Trent Grisham, Cody Bellinger and Ben Rice each had two hits.
Fried (2-0) walked one and struck out six.
Seattle's Josh Naylor lined a single to center with two outs in the fourth inning. It was Naylor's first hit of the season, breaking an 0-for-20 slump.
The Mariners' only other hits off Fried came in the seventh, an infield single by Julio Rodriguez and a two-out liner to right by Brendan Donovan.
Brent Headrick and Tim Hill each threw an inning to close out New York's four-hit shutout.
The Yankees took a 2-0 lead off Seattle starter Logan Gilbert (0-1) with a two-out rally in the first inning. Bellinger grounded a single to right field and Rice followed with a run-scoring double on a grounder just inside the first base bag. Stanton then blooped a single to right to bring home the second run.
It remained 2-0 until the sixth. Grisham led off with a ground-rule double to right and, after Aaron Judge struck out, Bellinger lined a single to center, putting runners at the corners.
Bellinger stole second, with catcher Cal Raleigh's errant throw sailing into center field to allow Grisham to trot home and Bellinger to take third. After a walk to Rice, Stanton lined a run-scoring double to left, with Rice stopping at third.
That was it for Gilbert, who was replaced by Cole Wilcox. Jazz Chisholm Jr. greeted the reliever with a line-drive single to right to make it 5-0.
Gilbert allowed five runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. The right-hander walked three and fanned six.
The Mariners signed shortstop Colt Emerson, their top prospect, to an eight-year deal worth a reported $95 million earlier in the day. The 20-year-old, who has yet to make his major league debut, is currently playing for Triple-A Tacoma.
